THE LEGACY

Daniel Alexander McCartney was born on December 15th, 1983, and grew up in Loyalton, CA. He was socially minded and had a heart for justice and service to humanity. Daniel had a natural inclination to community service. He participated in Boy Scouts and was passionately competitive in baseball, basketball, and football throughout high school. Due to his competitive nature, Daniel constantly strove to improve and serve those around him. His kind and gentle soul was available to anyone who showed interest.

After graduating high school, Daniel wanted the opportunity to learn a challenging level of technology and travel the world, so he joined the Navy. He served as a satellite communications officer, involving strategy and movement of military operations worldwide. After a six-month tour in Afghanistan, he received numerous awards and commendations for his expertise and service. During his time in the Navy, he stayed connected with the love of his life, Cierra. In 2004, two months before his 21st birthday, the two happily married.

Four years later, Daniel was honorably discharged from the Navy. By 25, he worked in juvenile detention and joined the Hoquiam Police Department. He spent six years as a field training officer, member of the SWAT team, bike patrol, and the crisis response team, leading him to receive the Masonic Award for Best Officer of the Year.

In 2014, Daniel transferred to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and, in 2015, joined the Mountain Detachment.

Daniel was born with a natural love for life and the people he knew. The Christian principles of our existence were evident in everything he did. He was intelligent, brilliant, quick-witted, and never at a loss for words. Daniel enjoyed music, technology, and sports. He was a self-proclaimed do-it-yourself home renovation extraordinaire and, at some point in life, may have been a political force due to his passion for our Constitution and the people's will.

As a driven CrossFit competitor and training coach, he met some of his lifelong friends at CrossFit Yelm in Washington.

Daniel's most outstanding achievement in life was marrying his soulmate, Cierra, and becoming a father to his three beautiful sons, Tytus, Tate, and Traxton.

Life was meaningful to Daniel. He surrendered himself to the joys of participating in family life. Every night, he tucked his boys in for bed and read to them before leaving for work. He loved their daily wrestling matches, nerf wars, building Legos, and playing video games. Life for the McCartney family will always be meaningful and fulfilling because of their love and high standards.

Daniel lost his life in the line of duty on January 8th, 2018, shortly after he turned 34. He lived a lot of life in a short time. He was a fearless officer who always lived life to the fullest.

On January 7, 2018, Deputy Dan McCartney responded to an armed home invasion robbery at a residence near Frederickson, WA. Upon hearing children crying and screaming from inside the home, Deputy McCartney courageously ran after two armed suspects as they fled into a nearby property. During the exchange of gunfire with the suspects, Deputy McCartney was struck by a bullet and, unfortunately, passed away a short time later during the early morning of January 8. The bravery he displayed that night was remarkable, and the strength shown by his wife and young sons is equally remarkable.

Our 484 Hero, Deputy Daniel McCartney, was a proud Navy veteran, husband, and father of three sons. Deputy McCartney lost his life in the line of duty on January 8, 2018. 484 HERO and Coffee with Dan was created to honor Dan's life and show our support for law enforcement officers.
